Types of Knots
Knotted fences come in a few primary knot types, each offering specific characteristics for different needs.
Fixed Knot
Description: This is the strongest and most rigid type, utilizing a separate piece of wire to form a secure, fixed joint around the line wires.
Benefits: Its strength and durability allow for wider post spacing, which reduces material and labor costs. It is highly resistant to animal impact and sagging.
Best for: Heavy-duty applications, large livestock (cattle, bison, deer), high-pressure areas, and wildlife fencing.
Hinge Joint Knot
Description: The vertical stay wires are wrapped around the horizontal line wires, creating a "hinge" that allows the fence to flex under pressure without breaking.
Benefits: This knot is more economical and the fence can regain its shape after impact due to a spring action in the tension crimps. It can conform well to uneven terrain.
Best for: Gardens, backyard fencing, and areas with limited pressure from livestock.
